Fishing Rod Is Not Only About Fishing, My Creation Is Also ART.
People in Taiwan usually regard bamboo rods as cheap "Kid's fishing kit" for there were tackles selling a kind of bamboo rods that made with a whole cane with line, bobber and hook as a set in a very low price for children who like to fishing in waters nearby, so people usually think that those expensive fishing rods should be made by fiberglass or graphite with modern technologies. But, there is a young man who dives headfirst in the world of bamboo rod making, from material, structure, tapers until the urushi art decorations are all what he is pursuing.
釣竿不只是釣魚，我的釣竿也是藝術
說起釣魚的釣竿在印象中，便宜的就是整根竹枝做成，最貴的就是玻璃或碳纖維材料，科技技術應用讓釣竿變得又輕又高強度，這應該是大家共同的印象吧! 有位年輕人一頭栽入手工製作釣竿的世界，從材料挑選、結構的組合、鑲飾的漆藝和手握的感受，都是他專注的每項細節。

Ding-Ye leaded me to show items in his workshop, several kinds of bamboo lying neatly around the space, he randomly picked up a cane strip that looked straight in our view then said "This one is till needs a lot of works for the twists on it.", from his introducing, we learnt that he's making rods with Tonkin, Yadake, Suzudake, Hotei chiku and rest of their kind we even never heard of, a bamboo fishing rod prices could start from a hundred to over 10 grands, while he telling us the price now he is selling is around 800USD we could feel his confidence and youth from his eyes.
第一眼的楊定曄有點瘦的，靦腆地帶領我參觀他的工作室，各式的竹竿材料一支支整齊排列著，隨手拿起其中一支我們眼中筆直的竹材，定曄手握著轉幾圈後說說這支還歪曲很多，還需要作火烤校直的手續。
踏入楊定曄的工作室，可以看到不同竹材，目前大多依照前輩的經驗大多採用日本進口的矢竹，不過也正嘗試著使用韌性極佳的台灣桂竹。一根手工釣竿可以從台幣2萬到十幾萬都是存在的行情。說起自己的一支釣竿以2萬5賣出時的定曄，可以從其眼神中看見青春與自信。

Through the different techniques, the rods could be made with unique decorations to make them more valuable. 經過塗生漆磨光再上漆反覆幾次後，造就特殊紋路，讓手工釣竿的藝術感提升。
Ding-Ye had mentioned that now Taiwanese bamboo rod makers are lower than 5 people, there was no history and heritage on this land so mos of them makers could only learn from books and internet, but he is fortunate to learn from Japanese tradiontal bamboo rod maker and being grateful to them.
Ding-Ye also told us that he is hoping that Taiwan start managing and protect the waters and fishery, that's one of the reason he insist to make bamboo rods, he's trying to make fishing not hunting but a way to study the nature by promoting people fishing bamboo such a "inconvenient rods", "Taiwanese needs to learn that we can not just taking from nature, or it'll collapse oneday."he said.
楊定曄提到台灣專業和玩家級的製竿師傅，可能不會超出5位，而要學習相關知識，得購買國外書籍和從網路的資訊閱讀和自我進修。他也很感謝日本手工竿職人一直隔海教導與提供改善知識。而從原本所學的設計領域的走上全職的手工釣竿師這條路，定曄很感謝家中的支持，才可以持續走下去，希望能蓄積更多能量提升品質。也期盼國內能發展像類似國外友善環境的釣魚運動項目，野溪釣魚要要付費購票，釣到魚不能帶走，讓美麗的天然景致，因有釣魚的運動需求而可以對於環境永續的觀念深植民眾心理。
